Thanks for a thoughtful response, Zip. You're right to point out that we're not all the same, mentally speaking. But maybe for those folks, it's not horrible to 'just see the road'--perhaps they experience it as focus or clarity. I mean from an evolutionary perspective, society needs people who are 'forest' people and people who are 'tree' people--i.e. people with a broad attention spans, and those with narrow ones. After all, if our tribe is being attacked by a horde of wolves, I want people who are not distracted by the stars in the sky. Unfortunately, in a modern context, that might mean people who hone in like a laser on the task of finishing a challenging hike but don't attend to their surroundings in a deep way.
But bottom line, whatever our cognitive processes, there's really no excuse for littering, ever.
