I've been nearly mowed down by speeding mountain bikers, too. On flat wide trails, multiple use is possible, but on steep mountain trails you are inevitably going to get reckless speeders trying to set records for descent velocity. Keep them off the wilderness trails.

The article in Outside linked by neverwashasbeen is great reading. It summarizes so well the Wilderness Act and explains why it is so important to minimize trails and their use to keep the land untrammeled and wild.
